WELCOME TO 4TH GRADE
WHERE WE'RE LOVIN' LEARNING!

Welcome to all new 4th graders! It's going to be a great year and I'm so excited about meeting you all and getting to know you very soon! I always PROMISE that I will know ALL 4th grade students' first and last names by the 2nd day of school. Do you think I can do it?

*You can look forward to a Chocolate Party after we test on your summer reading, The Chocolate Touch. Make sure you've done your reading by the time we return to school on August 11th! I hope you enjoyed the book as much as I have.
"Let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" Matthew 5:16.
Upcoming Tests for week of August 11th-13th
Of course, no tests this first week of school! We will be doing activities to see what you know and where to begin with learning this year.

PLEASE make sure you bring in school supplies and parents should begin completing the many forms sent home in your child's take-home folder for our school's records. Thank you!

Get ready, because your 4th grade teachers will be throwing a CHOCOLATE PARTY the following week!!! More detailed information will be sent home soon!

English: We will review parts of speech and begin Unit 1 in your textbooks, with a focus on types of sentences and structure (writing is done daily in your journals at the beginning of our day)

Math: (Level 2) Our year will begin with some basic assessments to refresh and review; We'll begin chapter 1 in our textbooks and review place value--going into the millions period; "Rocket Math" is a component of our math class and should be reviewed for approximately 5 minutes nightly (we'll begin with Set C in multiplication--easy!)
Subjects Taught
Beginning the second week of school, 4B students will be going to library each Tuesday morning and will have guidance with Mrs. Julia McCormick twice a month on Tuesday afternoons as well.

Besides the normal subjects taught to homeroom classes, I specifically will be teaching Level 1 Reading (get ready for a challenge!), Level 2 Math, and Social Studies for 4A and 4B. Mrs. Briggs will be your Science teacher in 4th grade. Please be certain to check both websites for information in each subject.

Orange Vocabulary: This will be a new subject for you and many find that it is tough in the beginning! You may benefit from using the link to the Orange Vocabulary Workshop activities. The address is http://www.sadlier-oxford.com. Click on "vocabulary" on the left side, then choose orange and proceed with the unit on which we are working.

Study Guides:
Please understand that Mrs. Briggs and I may distribute study guides specific to material taught in given subjects. These are done at the teacher's discretion and are to enhance the learning experience without diminishing the importance of the student's notes, texts, other learning materials and active learning/particiation during class. I will consistently review with students for all tests, in the given subject area, the day prior to testing.
Social Studies Vocabulary Powerpoint
You will find Social Studies vocabulary review for each chapter in this section; I usually post at least one week prior to our chapter vocabulary test for students to review at home!

Core Knowledge Cultural Literacy Saying for the Week
"Don't count your chickens before they hatch!" is our cultural literacy saying for this week. The students will discuss the meaning of this and then will write several sentences during journal time to show an understanding of its use. The students will be given a slip of paper on Monday of each week with their cultural literacy saying for that week to keep and share at home (kept in the take-home folder). E.D. Hirsch believes in the importance of children being familiar with a wide and varying amount literature and cultural literacy. This is a fun part of our Core Knowledge Curriculum.
