Subjects We're Learning
In this section I will update weekly what the students will be learning in each subject to give parents a better understanding and increase communication.
I teach both homerooms Science while Mrs. Hidalgo teaches both Social Studies.

Science
We will begin with our Meteorology Unit. Assessments will include worksheets, hands-on labs, and a unit test. Flash cards with vocabulary definitions are extra credit.

Religion
We have a new edition of our workbook this year. In 4th grade we focus on the Mass, Liturgical Year, Works of Mercy, and the Ten Commandments.

Reading/Spelling/Orange Vocab
This class involves exposure to various genres via novels, the text, short stories, and play acting. The number of novels are certainly a highlight of the 4th grade year. The students LOVE them! We will begin with The Chocolate Touch. After completion of the testing, we will have a surprise activity....Spelling words usually follow the reading selection, unless we are reading a novel, which then a substitution is made. This is the first year for 4th graders to explore the Vocabulary Workshop (orange vocab). This vocabulary program is tough but a great program to build upon the students' vocabulary skills. This series follows them throughout high school. We have a culminating activity at the end of the year with the Third Annual Vocabulary Pageant. It is so much fun! You will be amazed at how much the students have learned! Caution: students should not wait until the night before an orange vocab test to study. We review and study skills suggestions are given for them to practice at home. In my class flash cards with the word, part(s) of speech, antonyms, and synonyms are extra credit if turned in before the test.

English
We will begin with sentences- declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory, as well as compound.
We will also have weekly writing activities. These will begin as single paragraph assignments and build throughout the year. Creative writing assignments and story telling will also be included.

Math
We will begin the year with Place Value.
Rocket Math will also be a daily activity, beginning with multiplication. Nightly practice (1 1/2 minutes 3 X) is essential for success.
Test Schedule- Week of August 9-13, 2010
Monday:

Tuesday:

Wednesday: none

Thursday: none

Friday Reading: The Chocolate Touch
Study Guides
Study guides are made and used at the discretion of the teacher. Teachers are not required to prepare them but in the 4th grade we have found them to to be a useful study tool if they are thoroughly and accurately completed. Power points that are made will be posted here and will be removed after the test. With parental permission, students can drill themselves using the guides posted here.

You may access the Orange Vocabulary Workshop series website www.sadlier-oxford.com to review the current unit of study for the reading class. The activities are very helpful. Bookmarking the website makes it easy access and the students really enjoy the independence. :)
